“Freddy, Mac doesn’t have a twin brother. He has an older brother, Will, and older sister, Sarah Jane… and they’re not evil.”
I was just using a little creative license and hyperbole to drive home my point that it’s ridiculous that an overprinted base card that could dwarf the 20,000 PSA 10 Zion prizm base rookies some day if Mac continues to ball out is still selling for over $300.
“Buy the dip, Freddy. This card was going for over $500 not too long ago.”
To quote the great philosopher Freak Nasty, “If you ain’t dippin’…. you must be trippin’.
“Exactly.”
“If you ain’t doin’ the down low, you got to go.”
“Okay.”
But even the king of da’ dip knows you wait until it goes as low as it can go.
“You don’t know, Freddy. It could be done dipping. Maybe it’s a tough gem!?”
It’s not a 90% gem rate like the 2018 Topps Chrome Update Juan Soto…
“Told you –“
… but Mac’s current 66% gem rate is greater than Zion’s 53% gem rate. And given that 2021 products were printed even more than the overprinted 19-20 basketball product, if Mac continues to gain popularity there will be way more Donruss Mac Jones PSA 10’s than Zion Prizm PSA 10’s.
“Oh.”
Yeah. Any current or future promises of “low pop” Mac Jones base Donruss rookies are based in lies or manipulation or both which means you’ll be left holding the bag.
“But what if he becomes the next Tom Brady?”
It’s never a great investing strategy to assume a player is going to be THE GOAT, but I’ll play along. IF Mac wins 7 Super Bowls and 5 MVPS his most comparable card would most likely be Tom’s base fleer rookie card. Only 1,635 have been graded in total by PSA. There are 107 PSA 10’s after 21 years. There are already 844 Mac Jones Donruss PSA 10s after 3 months.
“What does the Brady fleer go for?”
$1,300.
“Oh.”
Even if Mac Jones does become Tom Brady, do you think a card with potentially 200x the supply is going to be worth even close to $1,300?
“Nope.”
I agree. At $300+ there is no upside even baking in a Tom Brady-esque career.
So in conclusion….
“Don’t buy it. We get it, Freddy.”
As always, I’m Freddy… and you’re welcome. Happy Holidays to you all!
