Toilet Bol: A Sports Card Investment Threequel

Chris Farley as Tom O'Malley from the Herlihy Boy SNL Sketch warning sports card investors not to buy Bol Bol cards.

You’re staring at eBay admiring those shiny 2019 Prizm Silver PSA 10 Bol Bol rookie cards. Your mind starts racing, and you think to yourself, “Wow, he’s on the Phoenix Suns now! KD. Devin Booker. Bradley Beal. He’s got to be a good sports card investment now, right!?

He’s going to get major minutes on a contender, baby! This is my ticket to that beach house!”

Buy LOW. SELL at the mountain top.

Except Bol Bol will give you altitude sickness in base camp.

Sweet mother of god don’t you hit this eBay BIN!

I said don’t do it.

Close your eBay app, (wo)man!

Close it! Close it! Close it!

Did you close it? Good.

Now listen. I’m here to give you a small dose of reality. So, get ready for a circuitous ride as we explore why you absolutely, positively, and most definitely should not invest in Bol Bol rookie cards… ever… again.

You know this to be true, but a lot of you seem to forget and need constant reminders.

Take a deep breath. Step back… and look at what investing in Bol Bol rookie cards really looks like… feels like… sounds like.

Did you hear the flush of a toilet?

Don't buy graphic with sports cards in the toilet. This graphic has Bol Bol rookie cards.
Seems like we have to do these, “Don’t buy, Bol Bol!” posts yearly.

You should have because there is almost a 100% chance that Bol Bol cards will eventually go to zero.

Sports card investments are all about weighing the risks. And, for the love of god, Bol Bol comes with a truckload of them!

Bol Bol has a history of injuries, my friends… and they are of the foot variety.

Foot injuries are a death knell for big men.

Bill Walton. Yao Ming. Greg Oden. Didn’t work out so well for them… and Bol Bol has already had 2 foot surgeries before the age of 24.

Then there are the reported attitude issues that saw the projected top 10 pick drop all the way to the middle of the second round!

Has he reformed his selfish ways? A third team in five seasons doesn’t make me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Could he play a lot with the Suns? Hypothetically. But the signing doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed. Bol’s signing was a minimum flyer on a bench unicorn. With KD, Beal, and Booker eating up most of the cap, the Suns have to fill their roster with minimum contracts.

But Bol Bol’s playing time has been as inconsistent as my workout routine. Even if he ends up starting, there is only one basketball to go around, and I’m going to go out on a limb and say he’s not going to usurp Booker, KD, and Beal in the offensive pecking order.

As I highlighted in the Bradley Beal post, there isn’t room for a 3rd banana to go hobby nuclear long term. If you agree with that logic, what do you think the long term sports card investment outlook is for a 4th banana?

You guessed it. NOT good.

Face it, folks. Bol Bol is a project in the making. He’s got the height, the potential, but we’re still waiting for him to consistently deliver on the court. Investing in his rookie cards is like expecting me to gracefully walk across a tightrope – it’s a hilarious sight, but it ain’t gonna end well!

Could you make money on Bol Bol? Hypothetically… on a short term flip to the uninitiated.

But the market can go from red hot to ice cold in a heartbeat, and if you don’t time it perfectly you can forget about making money, or even taking a loss. You most likely won’t even be able to sell the card… for anything.

I get it. Seven foot two dudes with unique names who shoot a career 29% from three don’t grow on trees.

And the Phoenix Suns might be tempting, but please, please, please think twice… and then maybe a third time.

If you truly believe in the Suns championship aspirations, find some deals on Devin Booker and Kevin Durant rookie cards.

Injury-prone, minimum contract players with attitude questions playing with three ball dominant players doth not make a good sports card investment.

As always, I’m Freddy, this is most definitely NOT financial advice… and you’re welcome.
