2019 Prizm Football hanger boxes
2019 PRIZM FOOTBALL HANGER BOXES

Bill O’Brien’s lunacy gifting Deandre Hopkins to Kyler Murray doesn’t mean you should lose YOUR mind and not take advantage. The diminutive dynamo is a popular pick amongst fans, collectors, and NFL pundits for a Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson-style second year breakout — I personally think comparing anyone to Mahomes is unfair — and adding Nuk to Larry Fitzgerald, Christian Kirk, and Chase Edmonds in a potentially nuclear air raid offense could lead to gaudy numbers and even gaudier Prizm base rookie card values. This assumes the Arizona Cardinals front office avoids their own bout of the Bill O’brien’s and drafts a very large human being to protect said diminutive dynamo in the first round of this year’s NFL draft.

With base BGS 9.5 Prizm Kylers’s selling for $100-$150, now would be a good time to stock up on 2019 Prizm hanger boxes with red ice exclusive parallels for $15.98 at Walmart. Buy three and shipping is free. At retail prices, the hangers are a modest risk to rip and if you were to land a slick, red ice Kyler you’re looking at 2x to 3x the base value at least. It’s a cost conscious gamble for the chance to snag a premium rookie card. For the more risk adverse, keep the hangers sealed and flip them if/when the offensive Rookie of the Year goes off. ROI on selling boxes and packs isn’t as high as a high grade rookie du jour en fuego, but the value of sealed boxes of popular legacy brands is more stable over time with the risk spread amongst the chase for other desirable rookies — Jones, Lock and Haskins — in the product if Kyler were to sustain an injury or play poorly.

That’s IF those other rookies end up being desirable… and that’s a HUGE FREAKING IF. In my opinion, Kyler is the only true potential star caliber QB with staying power from this class, but there could be some opportunities for quick flip ROI if Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, or Dwayne Haskins light it up and sales are timed accordingly. I only mention QBs because, as you probably already know, they are the only football cards that sustain substantial value outside of a few outlier fan favorites and Hall of Famers with outsized personalities.

Paramount, and something you’ll continue to hear from me in my blog posts, is that sports cards are supposed to be a fun HOBBY #1. Whether your definition of fun is only collecting your favorite players and teams, or getting juiced when your bet on a rookie quadruples in value after a Super Bowl championship — thank you, Patrick Mahomes! — or both, it’s a HOBBY meant for enjoyment with disposable cash.

Sports cards can be a fantastic alternative investment, and a highly profitable one if you pick the right PLAYER, at the right TIME, at the right PRICE, and SELL at the right time… or he or she goes on to become a HALL OF FAMER or CULTURAL ICON or BOTH… but that’s only 5-10 players tops a decade.

Can Kyler be one of those players? Yes. Could he also become Donovan McNabb? Yep… and that’s not a slight to Kyler or Donovan. Fans forget how good Donovan McNabb was in his prime. And there lies the problem. Fans forget good. His base topps chrome gem mint grade rookies can now be had for a lot less than Kyler’s right now. Here’s to Kyler being more Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes and less McNabb-ish.

FREDDY FORECAST: $39.99 per hanger by end of the 2020-21 season.
